Who Do You Think You Are?

Posted on 04:50 by Unknown

Our Deepest Fear--Marianne Williamson

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous,
talented and fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other
people won't feel insecure around you.

We were born to make manifest the glory of
God that is within us.

It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine,
we unconsciously give other people
permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.

—Marianne Williamson

Winner of the $50.00 Amazon Gift Card Spring Break Giveaway!!

Posted on 08:31 by Unknown

Yes, I realize it's sideways. My inability to turn the final video (believe me, I tried) is evidence of my true tech savvy.

Note to self--from now on, just remember to hold the camera the other way.

Congratulations Laura Pauling! I'll check your profile for your email address and be in touch.

20,000 Words in 9 Days!

Posted on 08:30 by Unknown
First, thank you everyone who's blogged and tweeted so far about my $50.00 Amazon Gift Card giveaway! Your entry, or entries, are noted and I can't wait to send someone some free book buying money! If you haven't entered, please do, you have until Tuesday the 22nd!

Now, about this coming week. As I've said in earlier posts, my intention this Spring Break week is to work as much as I can on my current WIP (currently titled Midheaven.) The question is, how much is "as much as I can."

I'm talking specifics here, I'm talking an end of week word count goal that I can then break down into daily, manageable chunks.

I have, in total, 9 days.

My intention is to have a completed rough draft of this novel by September 2011. (I do most of my writing over breaks from school--summer is huge for me.)

I toyed with this number earlier but it made me nervous. 20,000 words in nine days. That, plus what I already have completed, will send me into the summer months with a 1/3 of the book finished in the rough.

Okay, so here it is. My intention, promise, goal to myself--I will add another 20,000 words, starting tomorrow at 4:00 am (oh God) to Midheaven by the end of March 27th.

I'll let you know how goes it.

(any and all words of support and/or encouragement are totally appreciated)

$50.00 Amazon Gift Card Spring Break Giveaway!

Posted on 20:09 by Unknown
Today is going to be tough. That last day before a break and my launch into a much looked forward to week of pure writing (fiction that is, no psych reports allowed!) and reading, reading, reading. I am almost finished with I Am Number Four and I'm looking forward to the August release date of The Power of Six (Yay! but does anyone have an ARC?) and let's not forget the stack of other, sadly neglected, titles waiting for me on my IPad.

I can't wait.

So, to celebrate this upcoming week of unadulterated time that will be spent exactly the way I wish, I'm giving away a $50.00 gift card to Amazon so that you too (even if you don't get a Spring Break) can buy your way into some serious escapism (of the literary sort.)

Rules:
  1. Follow my blog (note the "follow" button to your right--press that please.)
  2. Leave a comment that you might like a little extra spending money for your book/eBook collection
  3. Blog about my contest for extra entries
  4. Tweet about my contest for extra entries
  5. (please let me know, in the comments, how many times I need to put your name in my hat. I promise more pics of my darling assistants picking The Name...they love doing it)
I'll run entries through Tuesday the 22nd. Good luck, best wishes, thank you, thank you, thank you for being here and participating and just being a cool writer/reader type person in general.

Almost There

Posted on 04:30 by Unknown
Four days.

Four days until Spring Break. I am completely, totally, wholeheartedly looking forward to this Saturday and the eight glorious days to follow.

Not for the reasons you may think. I really love working with kids...they are the one part of my job that I never, ever get sick of.

Paperwork, number crunching, cognitive testing, whining adults...those I'm sick to death of.

Kids--never.

But the reason I'm completely jazzed about Spring Break has nothing to do with my job and everything to do with a little thing that happens to me when I'm not required to be quite so analytical.

No, I'm not going to be featured in an episode of Hot for Teacher Spring Break Edition Cabo 2011!!

But I am going to spend the time, every available minute of it in fact, writing. The follow up book to Ascendant to be precise which is actually already in progress with preliminary chapters and lots of structure outlined and planned--it's just sitting there waiting for me.

I can already feel the juice warming up. (That actually sounds kind of gross. Eeww) How about, I can tell I'm gearing up because of the places the old mind's been wandering to just lately.

I daydream about archetypes and flawed heroes, love triangles and scapegoats. I'm feeling in need of a Joseph Campbell marathon weekend (my kids hate when I do that!) and probably some Star Wars and Lord of the Ring (the kids love that though.)

I'm feeling like getting up early and staying up late. I'm feeling Big Story...Big. Like looking for all the behind the scene parlor tricks, figuring out how to steal that game and making it my own. I'm thinking dreams, shadows and notes. Reams and reams of notes.

I'm sensing a fat word count goal--20,000 in 8 days? Hmm, I'll sleep on that and get back to you. But one thing's for sure...

folks, the girl feels like writing.

MIddle March

Posted on 04:53 by Unknown
My tulips are poking up.

Is it just me, or does everyone get overwhelmed in March? Every year it feels like this incredible, collective build up. Like everyone is beginning to panic just a tiny bit right before the climax of something. It seems to me that it happens every year and every year I feel stuck, unsure what all the build up is for.

I work in a school so it could be spring break, CSAP (Colorado's standardized tests), or the fact that there are only 50 instructional days left in the year and we all feel like we haven't done enough.

But I get the sense that non school people get just as worked up (maybe not you specifically, maybe you're completely zen and if so I'll take two of whatever you're having.)

Is it spring? Or impending spring? Are we just sick, sick, sick of brown grass and cloudy skies? The sound of scraping frost off the windshields first thing in the morning?

Kids who are stuck with only getting indoor recess?! Okay that's completely just me and any other adult that works in elementary education.

I went shopping last night and saw that the big switch had happened. There were bathing suits, shorts and flip flops for as far as the eye could see. After fingering some of the brightly colored spandex, I buttoned up my winter coat and trudged back out into the frozen night air.

It is also, completely and totally that I'm functioning full time in my left brain right now. I know this happens during busy times at school but it still makes me sad. My brain is working to analyze data and write psych reports, not fiction. Not right now.

But it's right there, right under the surface. Waiting to pop. Waiting for the time, the switch, the slide into that warm creative pool.

My tulips are poking up.

On Love and Envy

Posted on 16:05 by Unknown
Have you ever read a book that you thought was so good it made you just a wee bit sick? A book that catches you big time in that tight and tiny space between being a reader and a writer. That insufficient space where the air is thin and you walk your own double yellow line. A book that makes you as reader say, "oh, oh I love this book sooo much, please never end." But you as a writer say, "oh, oh God. She is sooo good, so good..."

I just finished Kate Morton's The Forgotten Garden.

All I can say is that it was everything I hope for when I pick up a book and everything I work for when I sit down at my keyboard.
