What Rebecca Wants--2014

Posted on 12:06 by Unknown
(If you prefer Wordpress, you can also find this post here)

I started this post by looking back at my What Rebecca Wants--2013 post. Very interesting, for me anyway. I accomplished #1-4 and #10. Not bad I think.

As I start this first day of 2014, I'm not really in the mood to create a list of resolutions. I think they're great, and I look forward to reading the many personal lists that will be posted on the blogs I regularly read, but today I'm only feeling like writing about a single goal I have for 2014.

Happiness.

I think, like many people, the urge of accomplishment has hounded me, night and day, for most of my life. The worry about starting, maintaining, and finishing various different goals has caused me tons of worry and stress over the years.

There was writing books--sure. Publishing (oh my God the unhappiness!) But certainly other areas of my life. There was graduate school, paying off debt, even waiting for a specific amount of time to pass so that an event, like a vacation, would come quickly.

All of it was always this eternal leaning towards the future. This idea that happiness, or maybe it was only relief, would finally happen once XYZ came to pass.

Except the relief never did come. Certainly XYZ did. I finished books. I found an agent. I finished graduate school. I found a job in my field. I wrote more books. Vacations came--and went. We paid off debt. I saw my books published (by a small press, but still.) I left the job in my field.

But happiness, contentment, joy--relief from the striving, it never came.

I have come to believe that, even if every single one of my wildest wishes were to come true tomorrow, it wouldn't bring with it a relief from the wanting because whenever something on my list gets accomplished, I simply move the bar of expectation.

I know, for a fact, that I'm not the only one.

Most recently, it has been Big Publishing. There has been the idea that if that happened for me, when that happened, finally, finally, I would have arrived at my Happiness Destination that has for so long taunted me out on the horizon of my life.

But, recently, I have been noticing a very unsettling truth.

Big publishing does not necessarily make authors happy.

I mentioned before leaving the profession I had trained for (school psychology) to begin working in publishing (many of you know that last summer I started working at a literary agency.) The idea was to learn as much as I could about the industry that has plagued me since the day I set my sights on it. Know thy enemy I suppose. So, I have peeked behind the big green publishing curtain and have seen The Great and Powerful OZ working the controls of the giant institution I had, for so long, been trying to click my heels into.

Want to know what I've seen?

A thousand people working a day job--in publishing. Writers included. Maybe even most striking for me--the writers. Most of them leaning towards a future that looks radically different from the present they already hold in their hands. A vacation. Retirement. That next book. The New York Times Bestseller List. The NYT BSL--again. A higher advance. A good review in the NYT. A Printz. A Newbery. National Book Award? A retweet by John Green? Their own personal Happiness Destination that continues to elude them on the horizon of their life because, like a mirage in a hot desert, that image keeps moving further away.

Don't take my word for it. Here is Hugh Howey's Huffington Post article about publishing and happiness. Nathan Bransford blogging about Creative Fatigue. Nova Ren Suma's haunting post on the single minded pursuit of an ambition that terrifies me in its beautifully, brutal honesty. The acknowledgment at the end of Felix J Palma's Map of the Sky where he alludes to his, "...moodiness, anguish, and insecurities." And, most tragically, the irrevocable decision made by too many authors to take their own lives.

For sure, there are a great many happy people who are writers. Just as there are a great many happy people who work in publishing. But I happen to think that these people would be happy regardless of their hierarchy in the land of publishing OZ, either behind that big green publishing curtain with their hands on the levers and cogs--or shut out in front of it.

Happiness, for them, is a mindset, not a wavy, far flung future destination. It's a focus on the immediate task at hand and finding enjoyment in the execution. It's looking around at the current moment, as it occurs, breathing it in.

Goals--I think they are VERY important. I have them, many of them. I want to continue to work towards them for sure. It is only that I would now like to think of them as little more than signposts at the end of the series of tasks required to complete them. Finish lines that always turn into starting lines.

There is no end, no relief, no "Finally" to look forward to.

I am already there--and there is here.

And right now, here is New Years Day at a bowling ally with my husband and our two kids. I left my list of wants on my desk--I don't want it to distract me from enjoying this moment.

Writing on my iPad Mini

Posted on 10:21 by Unknown

(If you prefer WordPress, you can find this post here)

I'm married to a tech guy. So, as you may imagine, many of my birthday and Christmas gifts have been tech and computer related for the last 17 years.

As a writer, this suits me just fine--usually.

This year, when I opened my gifts, all the paper was piled in the middle of the floor and, aside from the laptops we had both purchased for our children, there were no other tech type gifts.

Hmm?

Wait for it.

Then, Christmas Story style, my husband gets a quizzical look on his face and asks my son, "Matthew, what's that over there behind the couch?" Yes, you guessed it, three more tech gifts. One for me and each of our children.

This year, my gift was an iPad mini. I already had an iPad, a first generation one, and I think iPads are great, but I never really used mine for anything much more than as a reader and I would occasionally watch Netflix on it.

"Thank you love!"

The iPad mini sat unopened for a few days while I worked on my new Lego set.
IMG_0693

Fast forward--tech husband insists that all expensive devices be properly outfitted in suitable protective gear. (This is an ongoing joke around here) So, I'm online looking at cases for my iPad mini...and I have an idea.

What if this iPad mini could be more than a glorified reader and occasional movie supplier. What if this little baby could actually help me produce content?

Suddenly, I was excited about my Christmas gift. All she needed was the proper attire, and for me, that attire included a functional keyboard--one I could touch type on.

As a writer and mother who is still employed full time (Nelson Literary Agency) I am always looking for opportunities, stolen time, to use for writing. Writing books, writing blog posts, writing status updates, comments, you name it. I never really used my old iPad for any of this because I never acclimated to using that stupid, flat, virtual keyboard (the opinions expressed about the iPad keyboard are my own and in no way represent the opinions of a person that actually knows anything about tech or tech usage.)

For example, I have been known to whip out a pencil and piece of paper to write on my bus rides to and from work--I then transcribe all of this later when I am at home.

What if this tiny little package could help save a little time by allowing me a smaller, easily mobile device that I could take out in a second, type a few hundred words, then simply cut and paste later?
IMG_0694

The search for a usable keyboard case began.

I will spare you a detailed description of the hours I spent online researching for such a device and get right to the two choices I settled on.

One was the ZaggKeys Folio Keyboard Case for the iPad Mini.
The other was the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Folio for the iPad Mini.

After reading many, many reviews and taking several trips to Target and Bestbuy to find and try out these devices (along with several others) I ended up purchasing the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Folio.
IMG_0695 IMG_0696

Here is why: The Logitech Ultrathin allowed me the utilization of a functional keyboard, large enough for me to touch type on, without sacrificing the basic functionality and benefits of having a tablet in the first place. Basically, with this device, you can fold the keyboard under the iPad mini and still use the iPad as a tablet, comfortably, without ever having to take the device out of the cover.
IMG_0698 IMG_0699 IMG_0700 IMG_0701

While I didn't purchase the ZaggKeys Folio Keyboard Case, it does have an excellent keyboard for typing. It is back-lit, and has a multi-angle tilt function that is awesome; however, you basically turn your iPad mini into a tiny little laptop. You cannot bend that keyboard all the way back. It only opens to 135 degrees. To use your iPad mini as a reader that didn't operate the same as your laptop, you would need to take it in and out of the case (not what I wanted to do.)

So, I am now thrilled with my new tech gift, "Really, thank you, thank you love!" and my new tiny little keyboard case that allows me to produce actual content on said gift. I am hopeful that it will be a great device for commuting to work on the bus and allow me to take it out of my purse in a second, wherever I am, to write whatever little thing is crossing my brain in that moment.

And in case you are wondering, yes, this entire blog post was written on my iPad mini and Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Folio case.

How to get back to writing right after the holidays

Posted on 08:16 by Unknown
Carriage ride in downtown Denver
(If you prefer Wordpress, you can find this post here)

Truth: I have a hard time writing in chaos. Right now, on December 28th 2013, my house is in chaos.

There are presents that have not found a space to call home, there are clothes waiting to be folded and put away, there are children that have been playing too much Minecraft on their new Christmas devices, torn bows, ripped wrapping, and my desk is a mess. Furthermore, the beds are unmade! Anyone who knows me knows that the river of organization begins with made beds. All of this doesn't even begin to brush up against the writing To Dos.

I'm a mess.

Maybe you are too?

How can I possibly write and edit with all this hanging over my head?

I don't. It's too hard for me to focus when my space is a scrambled mess. It would be easy to pop in that first disc of Season One Game of Thrones my husband bought me and just lose myself in that rich fantasy for the next twelve hours or so--but then what?

How to get back to a writing schedule that has been knocked off course by a Christmas Mack truck?

Of course everyone's personal organizational strategies are different, but the way I will get back to writing is by first making a list. Part of the stress of having so many things to do is the mental spinning about ALL THE THINGS. For me, if I write them down, it allows my brain to stop worrying about them. They exist in a physical sense, on paper, and so my brain is then free to focus on completing the tasks instead of worrying about them.

So here's my list for today, it's not sexy, but it helps:

  • Make the beds
  • Fold the laundry and put it away
  • Bag up any stray wrappings and recycle
  • Open the garage and kick the kids outside
  • Organize my desk
  • Write some specific number of words in Affective Needs
  • Edit some specific number of chapters in Exquisite Immaculate Grace...
  • Dislodge the memory of how to lay out a book in InDesign from the recesses of my brain
  • Start laying out Exquisite Immaculate...in InDesign
  • Touch base with cover designer (in Wales)
  • Blog (check and done)
  • Etc, etc, etc
Honestly, I could go on forever, but lists need to be helpful tools not overwhelming machines of torture. I just put the most pressing items from several areas of my multidimensional life and try to tackle as many as I can. And writing absolutely has to be on that list as well--right in there with the dishes. Because let's face it, if I were to wait until everything else in my life was perfectly organized and complete before I sat down to write, I would never, ever, get around to it.
